Day 2 — The leash reset
The leash reset is three moves, in order. Every time your dog hits overstimulation (staring, stiff tail, tight mouth), you run the reset and start over. No correction. No drill. Just reset and reposition.
The three moves
- Stop moving. Your feet are the first cue, not the leash.
- Slack. Drop the leash hand to your hip — zero tension.
- Turn. Rotate 90° away from the trigger and walk 10 steps.
Why a longline matters for week 1
A 5m longline gives your dog enough room to make choices while you practice the reset without yanking. I use this one for Max during the first two weeks of any new behavior:
